Register your children now for Winter Break Day Camps!

Dec 11, 2015

MOBILE, AL – A common challenge for families that don’t travel during the Christmas holidays is finding engaging activities for their children during the winter break from school. GulfQuest National Maritime Museum educators have come up with the perfect solution with the museum’s first Winter Break Day Camps, set for Dec. 29-31.

Parents can choose one, two or all three days, as each day will have a different maritime theme. Campers will be divided into grade levels for age-appropriate activities in the museum’s classrooms, and they will visit and experience exhibits related to the day’s theme.

The theme for Tuesday, Dec. 29, is "Shore to Sea," in which campers will roll up their sleeves to investigate sand samples, and then complete an art activity using colored sand. They will also participate in hands-on experiments to compare freshwater and saltwater, and they will discover how the ocean’s motion affects our beaches.

On Wednesday, campers will pack their suitcases for "Passports and Postcards" and become tourists and experts on the Gulf of Mexico as they explore the coastal area. Before the day ends, they will design a postcard or a stamp highlighting their favorite destination on the Gulf Coast.

The theme for the final day of the Winter Break Day Camps is "Wacky Wildlife." Campers will dive right into learning about exotic fish from the Gulf. “From lionfish to natural filters like oysters, to the shy hermit crab, your budding marine biologist will discover what lies beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico,” Ilka Porter, GulfQuest Education Director

The day camps begin at 8:45 a.m. each day and dismiss at 3 p.m. GulfQuest will provide a snack, and campers will bring their own lunches.
