Team Duties/Responsibilities

  • Exhibit an intellectual curiosity and professional passion for GulfQuest, its exhibits and programs, and its mission "to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to understand and appreciate the Gulf Coast's rich maritime heritage through exhibits, programs and activities."
  • Ensure a positive experience for GulfQuest visitors by serving as an ambassador during all work-related activities for the museum, providing information, services and support whenever possible.
  • Interact effectively with other staff members in a manner that establishes and supports a collaborative work environment marked by a high level of team satisfaction, productivity and success.

Position Duties/Responsibilities

  • Participate as an integral member of the Exhibits Department in achieving GulfQuest’s goals.
  • Work with the Exhibits Manager to administer the department's policies and procedures.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Exhibits Manager and other technicians to perform maintenance on exhibits including mechanical, electrical, plumbing and electronics.
  • Maintain a well-informed, working knowledge of the museum's permanent exhibits, theaters and simulators as well as the museum's traveling/temporary exhibitions.
  • Assist in implementing and monitoring quality control measures to ensure excellent and consistent performance from the museum's exhibits, theaters and simulators.
  • Carry out an effective work schedule for routine maintenance of permanent exhibits and for periodic maintenance of both permanent and traveling exhibits.
  • Maintain and repair exhibits in accordance with direction from the Exhibits Manager and relevant product manuals, mechanical drawings and manufacturer warranties.
  • Report any technical issues with exhibits to the Exhibits Manager.
  • Strive to keep and maintain the galleries and exhibits in an orderly and neat condition.
  • Assist in implementing and monitoring security and emergency procedures.
  • Assist in set-up and tear-down for traveling and temporary exhibits and displays.
  • Work with exhibits contract workers to address occasional repair work.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with contacts from local museums and attractions.
  • Maintain flexible work schedule to include rotating weekends, occasional evenings and holidays as needed.
  • Other duties and management activities as assigned by the Exhibits Manager.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • High School graduate/GED, Trade or College Degree.
  • Proficiency in several of the following categories: electrical, plumbing, mechanical equipment, woodworking/cabinetry, computers, A/V, electronics, painting and/or drywall repair skills.
  • Proficiency and working knowledge of power and hand tools.
  • Ability to work as effective member of a team and relate effectively with individuals of diverse ages, talents and backgrounds.
  • Responsible for the use, maintenance and safe-keeping of tools necessary for job performance.
  • Conscientious about the work environment, keeping work areas clean and orderly.
  • Self-motivated, proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and active listening skills.
  • Excellent organizational, detail-oriented and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work at heights, as required.
  • Driver’s license in good standing (for driving company vehicles).

Work Context

The position requires a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The job requires a considerable amount of time standing or sitting (often for several hours straight) and communicating in person, through email and by phone. The work requires the ability to multi-task with a considerable degree of accuracy and exactness, and the ability to address multiple projects (and handle the accompanying stress). Regular/predictable attendance is critical. Appropriate attire is required. At times, lifting 50 pounds unassisted (and 100 pounds assisted) will be necessary.
