Floor Educator

Team Duties/Responsibilities

  • Exhibit an intellectual curiosity and professional passion for GulfQuest, its exhibits and programs, and its mission "to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to understand and appreciate the Gulf Coast's rich maritime heritage through exhibits, programs and activities."
  • Ensure a positive experience for GulfQuest visitors by serving as an ambassador during all work-related activities for the museum, providing information, services and support whenever possible.
  • Interact effectively with other staff members in a manner that establishes and supports a collaborative work environment marked by a high level of team satisfaction, productivity and success.

Position Duties/Responsibilities

  • Support the Education Department's goals, plans and strategies to fulfill GulfQuest's mission through informal and engaging educational initiatives.
  • Work with the Education Director and Education Manager to follow through with all established goals, objectives and evaluation methods for educational programs including exhibit presentations, birthday parties and community-based programs.
  • Participate in professional development for exhibit presentations, birthday parties and community-based programs.
  • Provide 15-20 minute shows to guests at designated exhibits.
  • Answer exhibit-related questions and explain exhibits to guests.
  • Host birthday parties which includes leading children in a hands-on activity.
  • Participate in community-based programs (generally off-site) which includes leading adults and children in interactive activities.
  • Assist with classroom and weekend programs, day camps, week-long summer camps and overnight programs.
  • Other duties and education activities as assigned by the Education Director.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • High School graduate/GED; actively enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college or trade school, preferred; coursework in education, history or science preferred
  • 2+ years experience working in a public setting; educational or child-centered organizations preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and active listening skills
  • Ability to communicate and relate effectively with individuals of diverse ages, talents and backgrounds
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment
  • Self-motivated and reliable; able to take initiative and present with little supervision
  • Weekday, weekend and evening hours and some holidays required

Work Context

The position requires a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The job requires a considerable amount of time standing or sitting (often for several hours straight) and communicating in person, through email and by phone. The work requires the ability to multi-task with a considerable degree of accuracy and exactness and the ability to address multiple projects simultaneously (and handle the accompanying stress). Regular/predictable attendance is critical. Appropriate attire is required. At times, lifting 25 pounds unassisted (and 50 pounds assisted) will be necessary.
