Join us this summer for GulfQuest’s Summer Maritime Academy program! Activities related to the theme “Celebrations and Shipwrecks” will be taught in the museum's classrooms. Cadets will also visit and experience GulfQuest exhibits related to the theme and hear from special guest speakers. Our cadets are led by GulfQuest Educators in a safe and secure learning environment. A snack will be provided daily; cadets will need to bring a lunch.
Hablas espanol? Parlez-vous Francais? Or how about a British Tea time? Cadets in our Maritime Academies will join the State of Alabama in celebrating the kick-off of its three year Bicentennial Celebration by learning about the native and colonial cultures on the Gulf Coast. Cadets will celebrate with language lessons and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) inspired exercises as they learn about the history and culture of the people who came before us. Cadets will explore and experiment with the methods used by archaeologists below the surface of the sea as they recover artifacts from shipwrecks…. And these are just a few of the exciting activities cadets will experience this summer! Activities will be grade-level appropriate.

FREEZE THE BALLS OFF A BRASS MONKEY
"Brass monkeys" were metal trays on the decks of warships. Cannon balls were stacked atop each one. In very cold weather, the balls would shrink (due to thermal contraction), shift, and fall off the brass monkeys.
